My current rear is welded but we welded in 1" strips around the tube, not a continuous weld. I'll really say that's some top notch welding that Brian and company did.
Feb 27, 2019 · Do any of you guys think it's ok when MIG welding new mild steel suspension brackets to the axle tubes, to do it with the rear end still bolted to the car and filled with gear oil? I know that the ideal way to do it would be to remove the rear and put it in a jig to prevent warping the axle tubes. Feb 13, 2017 · The heat concentration of welding apparently shrinks the metal, as is amply demonstrated when welding almost any two pieces together. The only thing that (now) concerns me is whether that shrinkage, when further applied to the opposite side to straighten, changes the overall length of the axle housing enough to matter. I read a thread on here that said to use Econocast 99 or 55 stick to weld to a dana center section, but dana center sections are nodular iron, while 14B centers are either ductile or gray.
Jul 09, 2013 · My experience is with 9" rears. Convention is to jig it up. Welding on axle flanges definitely needs the jig to keep them aligned. Always used the jig. If you leave the axles in when you weld the tubes it will help hold itself straight. Another concern is metallurgy. You will be welding a steel tube to a cast iron housing which is less than ideal. Most stock open gears can be welded, and I see no reason why these should be any different. I have welded several axles on mud trucks and have never had a failure.

I need to do a little grinding on the bracket so it will clear the bearing "bump" at the end of the axle tube. I think that I can limit the weld to the tube itself and not weld directly over the bearing. As you advise, the best place to ground the welder would be on the bracket at the weld site.
Feb 05, 2005 · If you're welding hot enough to go through the axle tube (to "strike oil") then your going way nuts with this and doing things flat out wrong. You don't need even 1/4" penetration on the tube to secure a 1/4 bracket with 100% strength (basically saying Would you weld a truck frame with a 110v mig? - Weld Talk Apr 23, 2008 · A 220v stick welding pulling 50A starts with 11,000 watts of power, or about 5 times as much as the little 110v MIG. I know from experience with my little Hobart 140 that good welds can be done on 1/8" steel and a bit larger with proper preparation.

These tubes are pressed into the center at the factory and plug welded in 3 places. For drag racing usage we need to weld the tubes to the center to keep them from shearing the plug welds and spinning in the casting. welding new axle perches? Hot Rod ForumNov 12, 2013 · The average axle tube is 3/16 inch thick. Truck housings sometimes have 1/4 inch thick tubes. Most after market housings have 1/4 inch thick tubes. It would take a lot of heat to burn through one. The average home MIG welder won't have enough amps to burn through one. Just be sure that you weld it hot enough to hold good.
Aug 22, 2013 · Wait a minute am I to understand you want to weld the axle tubes to the housing or weld some thing to the axle tubes? You might get away with welding a bracket to the axle tube but not spring perches or welding the tubes to the center section with a 110 welder. Itll take a 1lb of 1/8 MG 289 welding rod to complete welding 6 plugs and both tubes to coconut. A Rosebud will be needed for preheating. Preheat and maintain 300* temp while welding.
